Scientific-practical conference "Bee health" in Vilnius

On 14 February 2012, veterinarians, beekeepers and representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture met at the national scientific-practical conference "Bee health" held at the Faculty of Agro-technologies of Vilnius College, in Vilnius.
At the conference, the participants had an opportunity to exchange views on topical issues, and the results of the past few year research in bee diseases, bee treatment and contaminants in honey were presented by the Lithuanian scientists and veterinary specialists. A number of conference participants noted that the research results have been causing concern both for veterinarians and bee keepers, e.g. the fact that the officially registered medicines for treatment of certain infectious bee diseases are not available not only in Lithuania, but also in the neighboring countries. Specifically, such problems are dealt with in the EU Communication on honeybee health, where in 2012-2013 an increase in funding to investigate the causes of bee mortality has been envisaged.
At the conference, among other things, a decision was made to continue and strengthen the dialogue between all stakeholders on improvement of bee health and welfare in Lithuania and to organize such conferences at least every second year.
